UK Renewable Energy Industry Wants £625 Million

Posted on: March 9th, 2009 by Tessa Clarke

The renewable energy industry leaders are asking for the government to spend the £625 million it pledged right away. The Renewable Energy Association has noted that the UK is already falling behind other countries in terms of renewable energy investments. Acting now could help the UK quickly boost the supply of green energy it gets in the short-term.

The Renewable Energy Association has found that other counties are spending way more money on renewable energy than the UK. France is reporting to spend nearly three times the amount of money as the UK. Other places like China are proposing to spend almost 100 times more than what the UK is currently putting towards their renewable energy projects.

The reason for the sudden boost in renewable energy is clear. The UK is facing great power problems and has to come up with other ways to produce power. Meanwhile, the UK has to come up with ways to be more energy efficient. To do this, the UK government has already said they want to give every home a “green” makeover. By making homes more energy efficient, the UK will see a great reduction in the amount of energy that is being used. They also hope to upgrade the National Grid to better handle the new nuclear power plants and wind farms that will be hooked up to it. This would call for a £4.7 billion investment.

By using more renewable energy, the UK will be able to move towards cleaner energy and provide a low carbon atmosphere. This will be done, not only with the renewable energy, but with the further development of coal storage and carbon capture.
