UK Residents Urged to Recycle Easter Egg Packaging
Posted on: April 8th, 2010 by Justin BecksIt now seems that the UK is urging all of its residents, following all the Easter festivities, to recycle their Easter egg packaging. It’s during holidays like these that a lot of waste is made. It would help the UK reach its carbon emissions limit if people would remember to recycle during these important times.
The silver foil in which most eggs are wrapped is widely recyclable. On top of this, most of the cardboard from the boxes can also be disposed of in a very environmentally friendly way. In order to help people remember to do this, city councils are making increased efforts to provide recycling facilities to homes in their areas.
So far, Manchester council has already rolled out blue and brown bins for recycling of different kinds of packaging. These bins are collected on alternate weeks and offer residents a convenient and easy way to dispose of their extra waste while increasing the recycling rate. Manchester City Council’s head of environmental services, Rachel Christie, said that Manchester residents are keen recyclers. They should find it easier than ever to recycle packaging from their Easter eggs this year.
According to the Waste and Resource Action Program, cardboard and silver foil from Easter eggs generates almost 4,500 tonnes of waste in the UK each year alone. This makes it very important for people to remember to recycle. Experts say it almost makes these holidays that people love so much sad. Just because it’s a holiday, does not mean that they should take a holiday from caring about the planet. Experts also hope that more and more cities will continue to help recycle what they can all year around.
