UK Sees New Solar Panels for Homes Being Rolled Out

Posted on: December 15th, 2009 by Justin Becks

It seems that new solar panels, that can generate up to 20 percent more electricity than other solar panel systems, are being rolled out in the UK. However, only households with flat and low slope roofs will be suitable for the new renewable energy device.

The new system, entitled the Solyndra, is made of a string of tubes to which photovoltaics are wrapped. This makes it distinctive from all other flat solar panel models. The tubes do not require any surface penetration and can withstand wind speeds of up to force 12 without needing any kind of anchorage.

According to the developers of the Solyndra, the system boasts a higher claimed energy yield and improved reliability thanks to its combined use of copper indium gallium selenide and national circulation of air. Statistics that have been published by new homes website SmartNewHomes.com have revealed that one third of the UK’s total carbon emissions are emitted from homes. Thus, it is easy to see why these new systems would help in lowering the UK’s total carbon emissions if enough houses made the switch.

Under the Climate Change Act, the UK government is now very committed to reducing carbon emissions by 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2050. This is a goal that some experts claim is too big for the UK to reach. Others simply state that it is not impossible for the UK to reach this goal if homeowners and companies start to do what they can to lower their carbon footprint. This is not something that the government will be able to do by itself.
