UK Sees Record Number of Solar Panels Installed

Posted on: August 30th, 2010 by Beth Williams

Reports now show that a record number of solar panels have been being installed on UK homes. These figures, which come from Ofgem, show that homeowners in the UK are becoming pretty serious about doing all the can to help protect the environment. Either that, or people are doing all they can right now to save money, and this includes trying to cut down on their power bill.

Ofgem revealed that there were some 1,400 homes that were fitted with solar panels in June. This number went up in July when 1,700 homes had their homes fitted with solar panels. However, so far this month (August) there have been some 2,257 homes that have installed solar panels. This is an amazing jump that shows how serious people are becoming.

It now seems that solar panel providers are suggesting that the feed in tariff are the main reason why people have been encouraged to install these panels. People are to get 41.3p for every unit of energy they generate at their house.

Homeowners are going to actually be able to earn money from the energy that they generate for the next 25 years. The Energy Saving Trust has estimated that the average property is going to generate some 700 pounds a year. This is on top of the fact that these home will be saving around 100 pounds on their energy bills. This trend could continue as more utility firms start offering customers incentives to join the schemes.

Right now the biggest incentive that people are seeing is having these solar panels installed for free. However, the only problem with some of these kinds of offers is the fact that the company is not actually giving the owner the solar panels. That means that they get to enjoy free energy, but do not get to cash in on the lucrative feed in tariffs.
