UK Under Fire After Halting Solar Energy Program

Posted on: March 17th, 2009 by Jenson Brayshaw

The UK government has become under attack by criticism after opting to close out their grant program for solar energy. This decision, which hit last week, is said by many campaigners to be a mockery of the UK government’s commitment to a low carbon economy, as well as renewable energy as a whole.

Many environmental campaigners are quite upset with the fact that the solar industry will not go over a year without any further support. They also feel that the task of creating 400,000 new green jobs will be unreachable without further help for the solar industry.

The head of the UK Green Building Council, Paul King, has made note that the prime minister had talked about needing to invest more into the low carbon infrastructure as a way to help stimulate the economy. Paul King feels that the grant system for solar energy did just that and that it is absurd to now suspend the grant system.

A spokesperson from the the UK goverment’s Department of Energy and Climate Change had made note that the UK government is very aware of the popularity of the grant system, and they have been working hard in finding options that are a possible solutions to fix these problems and concerns. However people at Friends of the Earth have accused the Department of Energy and Climate Change of be standing in the way of progress for a low carbon economy. They state that this department is remaining very sympathetic to fossil fuel companies, and thus, halting any further advance in the renewable energy industry.
