US and China Will Work Together on Climate Change
Posted on: July 29th, 2009 by Emma YoungThe United States and China, two of the world’s largest producers of greenhouse gases, signed an agreement yesterday ensuring joint efforts from both countries on climate change, energy, and the overall protection of the environment.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) requires both countries to work together to reach a joint solution that would combat environmental issues globally. Under the MOU, China and the U.S will now remain in constant dialogue to reduce their high rates of greenhouse emissions until they have reached their goal of a low carbon global reality.
The agreement comes as a means to reach positive environmental solutions in both countries in time for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
“In recent years, China has taken impressive steps to improve energy efficiency, deploy renewable energy, and invest in clean energy technologies. Both our countries, however, must do more. And that’s why today’s agreement is so important. Today’s agreement should send a clear signal that the United States and China are ready to work together on clean energy and climate change. It sets the stage for what I hope will be many years of close cooperation,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu on the day the memorandum was signed.
The memorandum is part of a larger program called the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue that took place Monday and Tuesday in Washington DC.
