Vattenfall UK and Wavebob Team Up to Develop Utility-Scale Wave Energy in Ireland
Posted on: October 22nd, 2009 by Jason DrewVattenfall, a Swedish utility giant, and wave-energy developer Wavebob, based in Ireland, said Monday that they will build their join project, a commerical-scale wave energy facility, out off the west coast in Ireland.
The two firms joined together to create the joint venture company, Tonn Energy, and will be conducting research and development jointly in Belmullet, Mayo. The utility-scale wave project is being backed and partially funded by the government of Ireland. Although the monetary investment numbers have not been released.
Wavebob recently received aid from Ireland’s Electricity Supply Board when they agreed to help the company produce and research it’s new wave energy converter technology.
Goran Dandanell who is the head of Business Development for Vattenfall UK, said that Ireland’s great wave resources off the coast and the government aid being given to wave energy projects, makes it a focal point for developing utility-scale wave energy.
He also added that Vattenfall has a long term goal to meet by which the company will half its emissions per every generated unit by 2030. Furthermore the company aims to be emission neutral by the year 2050.
