Posted on: September 15th, 2009 by Justin Becks

Vestas UK announced today that at the European Offshore Wind Conference the company will reveal a new turbine which has been specifically designed for the offshore wind industry. The wind turbine manufacturer will unveil the new design at today’s conference being held in Stockholm, Sweden.

The newly developed model, named the V112-3.0 MW Offshore, is specifically designed to handle rough conditions at sea and still maintain optimal energy generation and reliability. According to the company, the V112-3.0 MW Offshore is capable of harnessing more wind energy than other offshore 3.0 MW model of its kind.

The company revealed the details of the design remarking that the unit can operate at a greater efficiency using rotor-to-generator technology, as well as operate under all conditions of weather including wind speeds up to 9.5 m/s.

Vestas will begin marketing the product immediately and the first models will be available for purchase and installation beginning later in 2010 with full capacity serial delivery beginning later on in 2011.

Anders Søe-Jensen, President for Vestas Offshore, said that the company plans to continue to develop cutting edge technology for the offshore wind market and says the new model is a step forward for the company in the market as well as a display of Vestas’ committment to being a leading manufacturer of offshore wind turbines.

Recently, Vestas also joined a research programme working jointly with Nowitech, based in Norway, to develop floating foundations which would be able to hold wind turbines in up to 30 metres of water.
