West Midlands Police Get First Electric Car

Posted on: December 21st, 2009 by Justin Becks

It now seems that West Midlands Police added a new green transport option to its fleet. These officers were finally handed the keys to a new Mitsubishi iMIEV, which is the first electric car that will be taken by this organization.

This green transport car will be used by the Community Safety Team over the next 12 months. The head of the force’s Fleet Services, Andy Keylly, said that they are keen to look at all aspects of their fleet’s carbon footprint, whilst balancing any emerging products against their operational requirements.

Andy Keylly went on to say that the arrival of these types of vehicles by many manufacturers is monitored very closely and will be more so in the years to come. This is one department that wants to start looking forward to the feature and what they can do with their fleet to help lower its carbon footprint.

According to many reports, the green transport option can hit top speeds of 81 mph and is able to travel around 100 miles before needing to be recharged. This is a big deal, because transport currently accounts for a quarter of all carbon emissions that emitted in the UK. Under the Climate Change Act, the government is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 80 percent from the levels that were seen in 1990. This will hopefully be done by 2050.

However, to reach this goal, the government is going to have to put many things into motion. This includes getting people and businesses all over the UK to do their part in helping to lower their carbon footprint.
