Wind energy development facing obstacles

Posted on: July 2nd, 2008 by Emma Young

Though the Renewable Energy Strategy recently unveiled by Gordon Brown the British Prime Minister has been welcomed, the wind energy sector has claimed that there are obstacles standing in the rapid development of wind power generation facilities.

Renewable Energy Systems which is a division of the Sir Robert McAlpine construction group was in full support of the renewable energy strategy which was unveiled on the twenty sixth of June but they regretted that problems with access to the grid was a big impediment.

The chief executive officer of Renewable Energy Systems in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Douglas Wright, claimed that for years they have been ready to develop wind farms with a generation capacity running into hundreds of megawatts but they had been discouraged by the lengthy planning application process as well as problems in obtaining connection to the national grid.

While welcoming the move by the government, Douglas Wright suggested that quick action was needed to ensure that the renewable energy strategy was implemented and that it attained the results that it had targeted to achieve.

On the other hand the British Wind Energy Association has also made demands to the government asking that the process be speeded up. The association also estimated that an additional sixty billion sterling pounds would require to be invested in the wind power sector.

The chief executive officer of the British Wind Energy Association, Maria McCaffery, welcomed the renewable energy strategy by the government but warned that decisive action was needed to bring the strategy to realisation.
