Wind farm developer appeals

Posted on: July 1st, 2008 by Tessa Clarke

A developer of wind farms has appealed against a decision to deny him the right to set up wind energy turbines in Northumberland. The wind farm developer, Catamount Energy had proposed to erect six wind energy turbines at Barmoor, in the middle of Lowick and Ford.

Earlier the wind developer had proposed to set up nine wind energy turbines. However the councillors in the local authority came to a conclusion that the wind energy scheme would affect the landscape of Northumberland negatively and eight of them voted against the proposal compared to one who was for it. Now the lodging of the appeal means that a public inquiry into the wind farm will have to be conducted.

The proposal by Catamount Energy was rejected just as was the case with two other projects; one involved the setting up of 7 wind energy turbines at Moorsyde and the other involving the building of seven wind energy turbines at Toft Hill. The seven wind energy turbines at Toft Hill were being installed by Npower Renewables but the firm is yet to lodge an appeal. Just like with Catamount Energy, the Npower Renewables project was voted against by eight councillors.

Your Energy, which is the firm behind the proposal to set up seven wind energy turbines at Moorsyde scheme, has yet to make public the next step. The local authority in Northumberland is expecting to hold several public inquiries including one in September. This is likely to cost the council a lot of money to stage the public inquiries as well as to hire legal help as well as planning experts.
