Wind farm dream comes alive fifteen years later
Posted on: May 9th, 2008 by Tessa ClarkeA wind farm was officially unveiled fifteen years after the man behind the scheme first conceived the idea.
The notion of setting up wind turbines on his land first came to Adam Twine when he was twenty eight. But it is at the age of forty three that he is finally realising his long-cherished dream. Westmill Wind Farm now comprises of five huge wind energy turbines on what was previously an airfield of the Royal Airforce.
The wind farm will have a power generation capacity that will suffice the consumption of two thousand and five hundred households. The founder of the wind farm was thrilled and was grateful to all the people who had contributed to the success. He called for changes in the attitudes of people in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and save the planet.
The Westmill Wind Farm required an investment of six million pounds and is the first wind farm in the United Kingdom to have been constructed wholly by the community and to be fully owned by the community as well. The wind farm will operate like a cooperative where all the stakeholders regardless of their share of investment will have a say in the running of its affairs. Currently there are five hundred members.
Among those who joined in the wind farm is John Stott, an engineer and Vogt Sjoerd, a consultant. They were both in agreement that the wind turbines and other renewable sources of energy were the way to go in order to save the human race and the planet.
The wind turbines, which rise to a height of eighty metres, have been generating electricity for the past six weeks and have a lifespan of two and a half decades.
