Wind farm plan receives objections

Posted on: June 12th, 2008 by Justin Becks

The Scottish government has received a letter from the Forres Angling Association who are objecting to proposals to develop the Berry Burn wind-farm. The association fears that of the consequences the wind farm might have at the lower parts of River Findhorn.

The proposed wind-farm is to be constructed at Carn Kitty on a section of property that is owned by Altyre Estates. The Forres Angling Association is also claiming that the fishery board which has among others Sir Alasdair Gordon Cumming the proprietor of Altyre Estates, are not bothered by the probable consequences of erecting twenty nine wind energy turbines on the fish stocks of River Findhorn

The formal protest letter which they have sent to the Scottish government could lead to the government setting up a public inquiry hearing. The Berry Burn wind farm has already received approval from the Moray Council. The wind farm is expected to have an electricity generation capacity of two thousand and five hundred kilowatts. Catamount Energy is the firm behind the project and has already submitted an application to the Scottish Government which must also approve of the project.

Besides the worries about the consequences of the wind farm on the fish stocks on the river, the letter objecting to the project also raised concerns over pollution, flooding, erosion and risk of landslide that the wind farm was likely to bring about.

The secretary of the Forres Angling Association, Campbell Ross, added that the association had shown full commitment to the conservation of the fish stocks on the river and ensure that the ecosystem was not destroyed.
