Wind farms get approval

2 wind energy projects which have been proposed for South Ayrshire have received approval. The two wind farms will have a combined electricity generating capacity equivalent to the power consumption of one hundred and seventeen thousand households.

One of the wind farms, the Arecleoch wind farm, will be situated close to Barrhill and will generate electricity that would be equivalent to the consumption of seventy six thousand households. Comprising of sixty wind energy turbines, it is set to the fourth biggest wind farm in Scotland.

The other wind farm on the other hand, the Mark Hill wind farm, will comprise of twenty eight wind energy turbines and will produce electricity enough to power approximately forty one thousand households.

Ministers in the government of Scotland have set a goal of generating thirty one per cent of power from renewable energy sources such as wind and the sun by the year 2011. This will be increased to fifty per cent by the year 2020.

Jim Mather, the Minister of Energy expressed hope that the consent give to the two wind energy schemes constituted a major step in Scotland’s goal to become the green energy hub on the European continent. He added that the country was gifted with a huge renewable energy resource base.
Meanwhile, William Hague’s wife has requested asked that her name be taken off a letter protesting against a wind farm. William Hague is the Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Ffion Hague revealed that she had not consented to her name being put on the fifty-name open letter meant for Rhodri Morgan, the First Minister.
