Y-Carbon to Bring Green Jobs to Depressed Industrial Areas

Posted on: July 31st, 2009 by Beth Williams

Scientists at Drexel University and Georgia Tech have jointly founded a company which will aim to provide more green jobs in a recession ridden job market.

The company, named Y-Carbon, looks to rejuvenate old factory regions with new projects focusing on the production of nanoporous carbon.  Nanoporous carbon is known for its large flat surface area making it ideal for water filtration, desalination, and certain medical treatments. Additionally recent research has indicated that nanoporous carbon can be utilised as improved storaging agents of supercapacitors.  Should this research hold true, it would be a major improvement upon current storage technology for sustainable energies such as wind and solar.

Supercapacitors are a good alternative to standard batteries as they charge much more quickly, however their storage capacity is limited at best. Improving upon the supercapacitors storage equipment would make them invaluable to harvesting renewable energy.

EVs and wind and solar projects have spurred battery and energy storage technology in new directions. However some methods of production can be costly and leave unwanted byproducts. Y-Carbon set out to amend these problems, by finding a low cost, highly effective method of harnessing maximum energy storage.

Y-Carbon hopes that its new technology will take off, enabling the company to bring much needed green jobs to depressed industrial regions in North America.
