Yorkshire firm wins deal
Posted on: March 31st, 2008 by Emma YoungLunar Energy a Yorkshire company has struck a deal worth five hundred million pounds to supply South Korea with an off-shore tidal power development. The deal requires the Hessle-based Lunar Energy to develop a tidal power generating plant consisting of three hundred turbines in the Wando Hoenggan Water Way off the South Korean coast.
The plant once complete will provide electricity to two hundred thousand South Korean homes by the end of 2015. Research and feasibility studies are to be conducted and completed by July while the installation of a one megawatt pilot plant is expected to have been completed by the March of 2009.
While the fabrication and installation of the tidal turbines will be done by Hyundai Heavy Industries, the design optimisation and specialist components will be provided by Rotech Engineering.
The chairman of Lunar Energy William Law attributed the choice of UK technology others by Korean Midland Power was a testament to their forward thinking management and it gave Lunar Energy to even get bigger projects all over the world.
Elsewhere in North Northumberland a scheme for twenty turbines has been rejected by councillors saying they would have dominated the landscape making for ugly scenery.
Offers had vouched for the Moorsyde and Barmoor developments to be given the go ahead. However all the councillors opposed the plans and only Councillor Brian Douglas, the chairman supported the plans. Other reasons given for the rejections by the councillors included the fact that they would negatively impact the Duddo standing stones and also their location in between two protected habitats.
