ZAP Electric Car Pays for Itself in London, UK

Posted on: January 6th, 2008 by admin

Owners of the ZAP Xebra electric city car are experiencing some extraordinary savings compared to a conventional car in London.  According to electric car pioneer ZAP, Londoners save so much on charging their cars, parking and tolls that the car will pay for itself in a year.
ZAP car owners can charge their cars for free at an increasing number of charging stations.  Following a trial of two in Covent Garden, the Westminster council is installing 10 roadside posts.  Around 50 more will be added to 13 car parks in the area.  They will be funded by Transport for London, the Energy Savings Trust, and electricity company, EDF Energy.  Users must register with the council and pay a one off fee, which covers administrative costs.  After these costs, charging is free.
In addition, ZAP car owners will pay no parking and no congestion tolls.  Colliers International stated that it estimates parking in London to cost US $55 per day, while congestion tolls are about $16 per day.
Steve Schneider, ZAP CEO, commented that the numbers are “staggering.”  He added that even quick math show that there are significant savings to be had—with no parking, charging, or congestion tolls for owners, the savings are about $50-$80 day and the car would pay for itself in a year.
