OVO Domestic Energy

OVO Energy
Based in Gloucestershire, England, OVO Energy is a privately-owned energy provider which has emerged only fairly recently. The company was launched in 2009 and is noted for challenging the tariffs of the ‘Big Six’ to supposedly provide better value for money. It has a growing customer base of 30,000, although only some UK households can take advantage of its energy savings. OVO Energy provides tariffs for both gas and electricity.

OVO Energy is an energy supplier first and foremost, and has a small team. It therefore does not supply boilers and engineers though it does offer smart meters so that customers can better monitor their energy consumption and receive accurate billing. Its customer service is purported to be excellent and OVO Energy, together with Cool Earth, is helping to protect the Amazon Rainforest at the rate of an acre per customer.

OVO Energy

Like most good ideas, Ovo was created to solve a problem.

OVO Energy offers a couple of tariffs for gas and electricity: the New Energy Plan, 15 per cent of which is from renewable sources, and the Green Energy Plan, which is from 100 per cent renewable sources. The Green Energy Plan is sourced entirely by landfill gas plants, wind turbines and other green sources. Though more expensive than the New Energy Plan, it works out cheaper than similar plans from other energy providers.

Both plans have fixed pricing options, although there are cancellation fees for gas and electricity on these tariffs which is cancelled within 12 months. There is also a choice of paper billing (by post) or paperless (online) as well as online meter reading, but customers should bear in mind that payment is by monthly direct debit only. However, if customer accounts remain in credit, OVO Energy offers three per cent interest rates on any moneys in accounts.

OVO Energy History

OVO Energy is an independent supplier that started life in 2009 through a handful of dedicated people in Cirencester, England. It bought and sold electricity and gas from various supplies to supply homes in the UK. The company was voted as Which? Switch consumer survey’s ‘Top Energy Provider’ in 2011 on account of its efficient billing and customer service.

Gas is sourced from the national grid – mainly from the North Sea and Norway – as well as farther afield in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Some electricity comes from the national grid as well as from renewable sources, such as wind farms in Gloucestershire, the burning of landfill gas, and from solar, hydro and tidal systems. In all, 32 per cent of OVO Energy’s power is renewable, which is way over the UK average.
